Cosmic Coffin 2022

A few years back before the James Webb Space Telescope brought a burst of interest to the subject of space I had envisioned myself traveling through our solar system, in the direction of Saturn. The idea was that when I am an old man nearing the end of my life I could be placed into a coffin with the things needed to remain alive, then flung into space to the point of crashing with the rings of Saturn. To me it seems like the trouble of floating in darkness for a little over three years in an uncomfortable box would be worth the final sights of approaching a large planet then colliding and becoming particles within its rings. Though the plan is implausible, my mind did wander into the territory of how I would get into space, what would the coffin look like and what would I take with me to survive the trip. All those factors are important to get me there, but those few final moments before being vaporized would be the greatest thing I’d have ever seen. Knowing that this could never be the case is bothersome, but I could wonder what it might be like and put those thoughts, along with the elements of our universe into this group of paintings. Our universe holds so many things that I will never know, but I do take comfort knowing that I could look within and bring unseen visions to our world.
